Well Said: Hubert de Givenchy

Count Hubert de Givenchy by Kai Jünemann for "L'Express".

"Fill a house with animals and you fill it with life".

So said Hubert de Givenchy (born 1927), fashion designer and man of style who often had a whippet and a couple of Labrador retrievers padding alongside him.

Pigtown says: Fill a house with animals and fill it with dog hair! But I think his sentiment is much nicer than mine! ;-)

There's nothing more that I wanted my whole life than a house overflowing with children and dogs. Hooray for Hubert.

AL says, Fill a house will animals and watch your roast walk away from the table. At least that's what happened one birthday of mine. Everyone was distracted for a moment and suddenly our elderly, blind Bernese-Rottweiler mix sniffed his way to the sideboard, tucked a finely cooked roast between his jaws, and slowly walked away to enjoy it.

I couldn't agree more, how could I argue with someone like Givenchy. He homes are definitely Pure style. FUNny about the roast- I only lost the occasional sandwich to my dearly departed-Your dear went for the gold. la

They are irrepressible, but when my cat died, the house was sudddenly full of ghosts, so I got my Jack Russell, who banished them with his daily pranks. We lost several dinner partys' food to our childhood Ridgebacks, and I can remember hiding my dog from my mother after one episode. I'm surprised that Givenchy was a dog lover, but he's absolutely right. They are also the best way to tell what sense of humor someone might have too.

On your birthday? What did you eat instead?

I truly admire the man's talent. His fashions from the 1950's to 60's were distinct and some of my favourite styles to date.

Hear Hear!! We have a Boston Terrier and two Pugs - even with a family of five and numerous 'kid's friends' our home would seem empty without the pups. Oh yes, I do have to vacuum often - very often!!

I could not even think of my life and house without my two dogs- they make the whole space. Not the same without them.
Do you have any animals? I love the Bernese- Rottweiler story! Oh my!

Totally agree with Givenchy: kids and dogs and cats what more could you ask for. I still have them and I still am protecting the counters--Jones even knows how to go shopping in the refrigerator without any assistance. Today it was my freshly grated Pecorino-Romano cheese. Love the photo of the green sofa with the Scalamandre Le Tigre and Leopard pillows!

Doesn't that sound like someone who renounced to love, who likes better animals than humans?... I am sorry Hubert but though it may be less peaceful, I like better a man in my bed than a dog on my bed!

Dear Grant, The current animal count around our house is one chow chow (Daisy) and two tabby cats (Sebastian and Mrs Susan).

Yes! Having recently brought my new charge home, I realize how much I missed having a little companion by my side.

I say pugs and more pugs. Would anyone believe that I once lost a perfectly roasted chicken (on the dining table) to a pug(!) when no one was looking? --TNT--

with two large labs, I'm with Meg, the dog hair is UNBELIEVABLE. Loveable nuisances.

Do kids count?

Our schnauzer liked eating waffles off a fork. In fact he liked anything that hit the floor except for olives. Could never quite get his mouth around them in a productive way. We've been dogless a few years and still remark about how much more we have to sweep the kitchen. I'm trying to convince my husband we need another dog. Until them I am simply gaga for dog stories.
