Adventures in Inspiration: The Camilla Mirror

The Prince of Wales and his second wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, on their wedding day, 9 April 2005. Her golden-feather hat was designed by Philip Treacy.

The Camilla mirror by Christopher Guy, hand-carved and available in black lacquer, Renaissance gold, or 20th-century silver.

How I missed this I'll never know.

Thoughts?

I thought that was about the best she's ever looked. There are just some people who don't look comfortable dressed and made up... she's one of them.

The mirror is fun. How big is it?

Multiple sizes!

Since you asked, it looks more like something Oddjob should throw at 007.

That is THE perfect hat. I'm saving this in my files in case I ever need it.

I like the other source for it that Guy used, to remember Hurricane Katrina. In that context, the black one works for me.

i think it is a pretty great take on the camilla hat. and i like it.
i remember that hat!

also commemorates hurricane Katrina

I agree with Meg that she did look good that day, but I just wasn't crazy about the hat despite the fact that I'm a Philip Treacy fan. If I recall, Camilla did not have the easiest time wearing it.

Dear Anonymous, Yes, I understand it is inspired by Hurricane Katrina as well, apparently, but the name is for the Duchess of Cornwall, so I think that probably overrides, at least in terms of prominence. I wonder if it was called Katrina first and then Camilla?

Hold on to yer hats here comes a hurricane? No no no, titled Brits sell better than American disasters. Look into that mirror and remember a deadly hurricane as you check your face; gosh, that's not an easy sell. Money to rebuild NOLA from the sales of a two thousand dollar mirror? Doesn't have a broad appeal, perhaps. The mirror reminds me of whirring machines at the county fair that spin and throw paint, it reminds me of a circular saw. Maybe Bush will buy it for his Dallas house. A dynamic accessory. Can barely wait for Mr Guy's Iraq mirror. Crackle glass, maybe?

You can dress her up...but I'm glad they are happy.

omg! exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!
but I thought she looked beautiful that day - that hat was very attractive on her. poor thing. she waited for him forever.

As for mytwocentsworth, I am probably one of few who thought the hat wasn't half bad. It sort of suits her very well. After all, she certainly didn't need a veil.

I love her confidence. She may not be the most beautiful woman, but she wears that hat like she is.

And whether it's feathers or a hurricane, I like that mirror a lot too.

If her name was more queenly we'd all be fine with her. Sadly, we've all known a house pet named Camilla and we can't get past it.

She looks no better or worse than the rest of the elder lady Windsors. The Duchess of Gloucester is the most stylish of the lot but no one knows who she is. (Wife of the Duke, Grandson of George V, would have been King if girls had been counted out.)

I like the mirror, but I wouldn't want to look at it everyday. Much like Camilla.

I agree with Meg that the Duchess of Cornwall looked as good as she ever would in that fab Philip Treacy Fascinator. (Isn't that a strange name? That is what they call those hats in England. I have never heard that before but maybe the same term is used in the States.) The mirror is kind of fun and reminds me of a groovy version of a sunburst. xv

the whole thing shows in whose hand Charles is holding!

His own!

the poor girl. I just feel really sorry for her. I do agree she looked the best she could.....I LOVE, LOVE LOVE her hat. I might wear it every day! what fun!

Know anyone who is having a lot of fun around you lately?

No? Wear a really fun hat! Positive vibes begin with great headgear!!

hi there! As you know I am a fan. You missed this mirror.......(just my opinion) because it is hideous.

Penelope

It is everything I have avoided in 40 years as a decorator.

Do you people read this stuff (the comments_ and feel good?

Do you guys feel like you are contributing positive energy into our world of design?

Just wondering. I have been at it now for 40 years. Very lucky; indeed.

Never have I seen this . Never in 40 years.

It really scares me.

I have seen supportive and uplifting people helping others in our business. I still see them. I also see an enormous undercurrent of negativity and scary stuff . Please let me know what you think!

WOW.

I find it insulting. do you not have a way to screen your people after a few times"

You will not miss me. I will not fill in this thing again.

Thank You.

I don't think I have the right spot for the mirror, but I must say that I do like it!

Indeed, she looked wonderful. While I may not love the mirror, I love the thoughtful creativity which spurred it on!

I am not sure what is going on with these comments. Myself (ie. "you people") and many critics are part of every pursuit. How many people have not walked past a clothing rack and thought, "Just awful, I will never wear it." Or, "Sooo dreamy." Were there not dissenters the world would be one dimensional. Having developed product for years, the critics were what sharpened me, their commentary ever-challenging...

As for whether or not we are contributing, see AAL's prev post on the book written by the founder of salon.com...

I agree with Pigtown's comments. I thought she looked happy, and that has to be beautiful, no? But every time I see Charles, I think of Diana's comment that he shouldn't wear a hat because he looked like a VW bug with its doors open!

Washington Cube said...

I thought the hat's style was done as an homage to her wearing a crown....but not. She certainly wouldn't be wearing miles of bridal white or Diana's tiara. It rather reminded me of those Roman gold diadems. Camilla is definitely a sturdy tweeds and Wellingtons girl. Stomping around in the mud at county fairs, handing out trophies for biggest hog or pumpkin.

Total madness. I think it should be the little photo next to the "whirling dervish" entry from now on in the dictionary and Wikipedia and such. Gives me motion sickness, the thought of having it on my head.

Yes, and how *did* you miss it?
